Henry Zorn enlisted and was mustered into service as a Private in Company A of the 27th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment on May 21st, 1861, at White Plains, New York, for two years service at the age of 31. He was promoted to the rank of Corporal on July 21st, 1862, and served throughout the regiments campaigns with the Army of the Potomac in Virginia and Maryland. When the regiments term of service expired he returned home with them and was mustered out of service with the company on May 31st, 1863, at Elmira, New York.

After being mustered out he re-enlisted on August 21st, 1863, at New York City, New York, for three years service, and was mustered into service as a Private in Company F of the 17th New York Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment on October 13th, 1863. He served with the regiment throughout its campaigns in Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina, as part of the army of Major General William T. Sherman. Taking part in the Grand Review of the Union Armies in Washington, D.C., in May of 1865, he was mustered out of service with the Company on July 13th, 1865, at Alexandria, Virginia.
