From the obituary of William Ward Adams as it appeared July 12, 1883 in The Dakota Republican.

W.W. Adams who died July 4th, at his residence 4 miles east of town after a lingering illness of about three years. Mr. Adams was one of the first settlers in Dakota, locating in 1860, with three of four others, where Elk Point now stands. He was widely known by the old settlers and thoroughly respected. He leaves a wife and five children.

William was the son of Erastus Adams Jr. and Lucinda Jameson Adams. He was born in Maine. Part of the Adams family had moved from Massachusetts to Maine. They are part of the famous Adams's that produced 2 US presidents, but where direct decedents of Edward one of the 8 sons of Henry Adams. Henry Adams was the first Adams immigrant of that line, to come to this country from England in the 1630s.
