Elvira (Adams) Martus and her husband were married on April 5, 1888 in Vermillion, Clay county, South Dakota. They decided to homestead out on the prairie. They were building a home for themselves and their 4 children when they were stricken with Typhus Fever. All the family had the illness but only John and Elvira eventually died of the illness. John died in June of 1894 and Elvira died Nov. 15, 1894 leaving the children orphans to be raised by their maternal grandmother Theresa A. Adams.
