In 1881 he was appointed to the Kansas City police force and served twenty years, rising to the rank of captain. In 1901 he went to the Metropolitan Streetcar Company as a special agent. After serving as a railway detective he returned to the Kansas City Police as a detective. He protected the streets of Kansas City from Cowboys who rode wildly in those days. He faithfully discharged his duties and won the respect of the entire department.
