A descendant of George who is (in 2011) a Bowling Green State University library archivist, found an old Perrysburg Journal newspaper article saying that George was named after U.S. President George Washington:

From the Perrysburg Journal of February 24, 1882:

"G. W. H's Birthday -- The birthday of Mr. George Washington Hufford falling on the 22d, the same day as that of his illustrious predecessor, after whom he was named, he annually observes this occasion with unusual decorum." ... He provided a free lunch to everyone on that day.

From the Perrysburg Journal of September 24, 1886, a portion of an article about the family "oyster depot":

"Mr. G. W. Hufford has just completed the papering of all his down stairs rooms, which look as neat as a new pin. ... G. Washington Hufford never takes a back seat in any oyster trade audience."
