Enlisted on July 15, 1861 as 1st., Lieut. and was Captain of Co., F 15th., GA Vol., C.S.A. and later Major of the staff of Major General Benning. He was wounded at the 2nd., battle of Manassas, VA.

William Edgeworth Bird was born July 21, 1826 in Hancock County, Georgia, as the son of James Wilson Bird and Frances Pamela (Casey) Bird.

He married Sarah C. J. "Sallie" Baxter, native of Athens, Clarke County, Georgia. Sallie was a daughter of Thomas Washington Baxter and Mary Wiley, his wife.

Known to family as Edge, and referred to as Uncle Edge in the dairies of Leroy Wiley Gresham, of Macon.

William Edgeworth Bird died on January 11, 1867, at his home, Granite Farms in Hancock County, Georgia.

Edgeworth Bird (1825-1867), planter of Hancock County (Ga.) and soldier in the 3rd Georgia Infantry Regiment, married Sallie C. Baxter (1828-1910). Their children included Wilson Edgeworth, and Saida B. who married Victor Smith and had a son, Victor Edgeworth Smith.

A selection of the Civil War correspondence was published in The Granite farm letters : the Civil War correspondence of Edgeworth & Sallie Bird published by the University of Georgia Press in 1988.
