Sarah Catherine Julia "Sallie" Baxter Bird
Mrs. William Edgeworth Bird

S. C. J. "Sallie" Baxter Bird

Sallie Baxter Bird was the daughter of Thomas Washington Baxter and Mary Wiley Baxter.

Sallie's father Thomas Washington Baxter's middle name is sometimes mistakenly thought to be Wiley — the Wiley name is introduced into the Baxter family by his wife Mary Wiley Baxter. This maiden name is given to descendants of Thomas Washington and Mary Wiley Baxter.

Also confusing to some biographers that in this family, children are named for aunts and uncles as often as for their parents or grandparents. For example, Richard Bolling Baxter and his wife named children for his brother Thomas and for Kate Rucker Baxter's sister Georgia.

Sallie had several siblings. They were Mary Eliza Baxter Gresham, wife of Judge John Jones Gresham; Thomas Wiley Baxter who married Ellenora Francesca Scott, daughter of Eliza Jane Jappie and her second husband William Scott; Dr. John Springs Baxter who married Caroline Matilda Tracy, half-sister of General Edward Dorr Tracy; and Richard Bolling Baxter, Sr. whose wife Martha Catherine Rucker Baxter was always known only as Kate and as "Miss Kate", and who died while her children were still very young. Richard Bolling Baxter was successful in helping Amanda America Dickson receive the inheritance she received from her father after her white half-siblings tried to block Amanda America Dickson from receiving the estate her father intended.

A description (link immediately below) of the Thomas Washington Baxter and Mary Wiley Baxter household, as recollected years later by their children's tutor. Note that this author, whose account is of his own time spent with the Baxter household, mistakes the son for a "Jr." and calls Thomas Washington Baxter "Thomas Wiley Baxter". An error seen elsewhere and easily corrected in the reader's mind once the names are understood. Thomas Washington Baxter, Sr. married Mary Wiley: this is the reason her son is (the first to be) named "Thomas Wiley Baxter". In the book below, the actual Thomas Wiley Baxter is the student and not a "Jr."; the father is Thomas Washington Baxter.
