Son of Ole and Emma Nelson, he was born in Alexandria, Minnesota, and later raised in Brainerd, Crow Wing Co., Minnesota. Alfred's father died when he was about five years old. He worked in the Brainerd railroad shops and also iron mines in Bemidji before moving to Wisconsin.
Alfred married LaVon Mabel Baker in 1921, and the couple raised four children: Dorothy, Alfred Jr., John, and William. Before retiring he owned the Standard Oil Service in Arpin, Wisconsin.
