Mrs. Elizabeth Whitebred who for a number of years has resided south of the railroad track and who has been sick for several weeks, died in this city yesterday morning. So far as can be ascertained Mrs. Whitebred, who was about 70 years of age, was the first lady whoever came to Cheyenne to reside permanently. This was in August, 1867, nearly twenty years ago, but before that time she had resided at Julesburg and also in Denver. In 1864 at Julesburg, she was with a train that was attacked by Indians, and while most of those with the train at the time were killed, Mrs. Whitebred escaped and was afterward taken to a place of safety by Capt. (Nick) O'Brien and his company.
The funeral of Mrs. Whitebred will occur this afternoon and will be attended by the pioneers of Wyomiug in a body, who are requested by the president, Judge J.R. Whitehead, to assemble at the city hall promptly at 1:30 o'clock this afternoon for that purpose.
