Gene was born July 4, 1922 to the parents James and Katherine Puttmann Gillooly in Murphysboro, Illinois. He was tenth of 13 children. All precede him in death but two sisters, Thelma Huppert and Mary King both of Murphysboro.
Gene married Nadeen E. Ward on March 19 1955 in Murphysboro. He served in the U.S. Army diring WW II. He owned and operated the "Old Rome Tavern" in Murphysboro from 1957-1969. He then worked for Southern Illinois University for the Botany dept. He retired as the Botany Green House manager. He and Nadeen lived most of their lives in Murphysboro, moving to San Antonio, TX in January of 2000 to be close to family.
Survivors include his daughter Karen Braswell of San Antonio, TX, a stepdaughter Georgia Lee Herring of Charlotte, NC and two stepsons, Ron Hagler of Westlake Village, CA and Dan Hagler of Dallas, TX. Grandchildren include Jeanette Braswell of FL, Ann Tiller and Michael Braswell of San Antonio, TX. He also leaves nine step grandchildren, one precedes him in death, 26 step great grandchildren and four step great great grandchildren.

There is only a grave marker for Gene. He donated his body to the UTHSC school of Medicine at San Atnonio, Tx. His ashes were not returned to the family.
