Margaret Ann Smith Brown, 88, of Myrtle Beach, SC, (formerly of Chillicothe) died unexpectedly April 7, 2009 at the Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, SC. She was born July 18, 1920, to the late Mayme Alice (Silliman) and Leonard Samuel Smith in Ft. Dodge, Iowa. On February 15, 1947, she married Darwin Wilson Brown who died March 20, 1988.
Surviving are children, Suzanne Alice Brown (Charles Luther) Ohrstedt of Columbus, Dr. David Wallace (Marian Louise) Brown of Perrysburg and Stuart Lawrence Brown of Myrtle Beach; grandchildren, Drew William, Ryan David, Kevin Joseph, Sean Robert and Katelyn Marie; a brother, Stuart Addison Smith of Hilton Head, SC; sisters-in-law, Joan Brown of Marion, IN and Ruth Cramer of Cincinnati; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Margaret graduated, in 1943, from the University of Missouri with a bachelor of journalism. She joined the War Department as a Signal Corp. Rep for the Aircraft Radio Lab at Wright Field in Dayton. She traveled on military aircraft to America's universities recruiting women with math and science backgrounds to be engineering aides while the men served overseas. She promoted the program nationwide on radio and in the movies. After the war, she served as Placement Advisor (personnel and public relations director) for Wright Field. She lived in Libertyville and Naperville, IL, Chillicothe (twice) and in Kirkwood, MO.
Margaret Ann was a Golden Eaglet Girl Scout, president of Iowa Pilgrim Fellowship, YWCA, worthy advisor Rainbow Girls, vice-president of Alpha Chi Omega sorority and president of an advertising fraternity, Alpha Delta Sigma. She was a charter deacon for Knox Presbyterian Church in Naperville having helped build the church. Margaret was a member of P.E.O. sisterhood for 71 years, Daughters of the American Revolution, American Association of University Women, Chillicothe Lioness Club and the 136th Battalion WWII Seabee Women's Auxiliary for reunions. She was active in local politics, agriculture and she was a member of Billy Graham's choir for a Columbus Crusade.
Services were entrusted to Ware Funeral Home of Chillicothe, Ohio.
