James Stanley Hendrickson, 80, Grand Portage, died Friday, April 3, 2009 at the Cook County North Shore Hospital.

He was born August 26, 1928 to Herman Sr. and Cecelia (LeSage) Hendrickson in Grand Portage where he grew up and attended school. He served in the US Navy from 1946 to 1948, on the USS Kearsarge. He returned and worked at the reconstruction of the Great Hall and was a commercial fisherman.
Jim served on the Grand Portage Reservation Tribal Council first as secretary-treasurer and then as chairman from 1954 to 1994. He also served on the Minnesota Chippewa Tribal Executive Committee (MCT-TEC). Jim was instrumental in the development of the Grand Portage Casino and Lodge and many other accomplishments that helped the Grand Portage Band.
He was a member of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and Holy Rosary Catholic Church.
He liked casinos, travel to Las Vegas and fishing. He also liked to polka and listen to classic country western music.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary Jane, and brother Michael Crawford.

Jim is survived by his brother Herman (Donna) Hendrickson of Grand Portage, sisters Shirley (Jim) Kaneski of Duluth, Bernice LeGarde of Grand Portage, and Geraldine (Ted) Kozlowski of Grand Portage, several nieces, nephews and numerous, close, extended family. Jim will be sadly missed by his family and community.

Rosary and visitation was held Monday, April 6 and Mass of Christian Burial was Tuesday, April 7, 2009 all at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Grand Portage. Burial will be at Holy Rosary Cemetery.
