John was educated as an engineer. He attended Oxford for a time and later sailed the "Seven Seas" in his father's vessel. The last time he left England was in 1853, sailing for New Orleans, Louisiana. He traveled up the river to Keokuk, Iowa, from New Orleans.
From Keokuk, Mr.Leffen crossed the plains by ox teamto Salt Lake City. From there he drove an ox teamto Carson City, Nevada.
In the company with five other young men, John walked from Carson City to San Francisco, arriving on May30, 1856, the day Cora and Casey were hanged by "vigilantes".
He left San Francisco for San Pedro and found work at Catalina Island as a blacksmith for General Banning. Later he traveled by Banning stage to Los Angeles, which city consisted of a few adobe huts and the old plaza.
In Los Angeles Mr.Leffen traded some gold doubloons for a horse and silver mounted saddleand briddle. . He rode to San Bernardino, arriving the day the Mormons left for Utah, having been recalled by Brigham Young.
His first days where spent at the Henderson home, an adobe building on Third Street, the present site of the Harris Co. building. He secured work in the old Jefferson blacksmith shop on Third street near Arrowhead Avenue.
Mr. Leffen later built his own foundry and machine shopon Arrowhead near Fourth Street. The shop operated till Nov.5, 1904.
He served as deputy sherriff, also as a deputy United States Marshall in Chinatown during a Tong War on the coast. He spoke seven languages including Chinese, which he learned in China. He was a Chinese made Mason.
An early-day fire chief, Mr.Leffen fought the major fires of the city. The city owned LaFrance Steamer.
