LAYTON -- Velma Barlow Riley, age 49, peacefully passed away Sunday, April 7, 2002 at 10:25 p.m. at her home after a courageous year-long battle against liver cancer.

She was born April 23, 1952 in Ogden, Utah the fifth child of I. Haven and Velma Kunzler Barlow. She had many family members and friends who were with her in her final hours. She was loved by many.

She grew up in Layton, and at age 20 was married for time and all eternity to Thomas R. Riley on June 2, 1972 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They made their home in Layton where they have lived for 21 years. She was an active and faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all her life and served in many capacities including: Young Women Presidency, Stake Girls Camp for many years, Stake Primary President, Ward Chorister, currently as the first counselor in the Stake Relief Society Presidency, and as a scribe for a Stake Patriarch for 28 years.

She enjoyed her job as homemaker and as a typesetter at Yes! Printing. She served on the PTA Board for many years and was the chairman of her 30 year class reunion. She played the violin and piano and enjoyed singing. She also loved to do crafts and decorate her house for the holidays.

She had a strong and fervent testimony which she shared often through her many acts of kindness. She was always concerned about others, always putting them first, even in her final hours. She was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, daughter and friend and will be remembered for her sense of humor, cheerful countenance and her compassion and concern for her family as well as many others.

Her husband and daughters wish to thank everyone for their concern and help throughout this last year. We thank all those at the Modern Health Clinic; Dr. Bergdorf, Heather, Ilsa, Olga, and others; as well as Dr. Williams and Dr. Perez Garcia for helping us to have one more year withour sweetheart.

She is survived by her husband Thomas, six daughters, SariAnne (Derek) Stone, Elizabeth (Jeramy) Reed, Erin (Jeffery) Shelton, Amelia (Adam) Collier, Shannon and Makelle. Also surviving are her father and mother, three brothers, Charles (Laurel) Barlow, Ronald (Nancy) Barlow, Gary (Patricia) Barlow, one sister Yvonne (Brent) Halls, six grandchildren, Ian, Mitchell, Susanna, Aubrey Velma Stone, Katherine and Tommy Collier, and 33 nieces andnephews.
