A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Goldsboro August 13, 1864, and gave his age as 16. That means two things: 1) his parents had given their written permission for him to enlist and 2) he still lied about his age because he was four months short of birthday number 16. He mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 24 as a private with Co. B, 200th Pennsylvania Infantry, and was honorably discharged with his company on May 30, 1865.
He married Catherine Ann Rupp May 12, 1867, in Goldsboro and fathered Elizabeth (b. 10/02/68 - married a Shear), Margaret E. (b. 05/10/70 - married a Girtis), William Edward (b. 04/25/72), Cora (b. 02/04/73), Carrie E. (b. 04/08/74), and Harvey P. & Eveline Viola (b. 05/07/76 - died young). In 1889, while living in Carlisle, he deserted his family for Emma Hoffmaster. Late in life a physician described him as "over nourished."
