Mr. Radford was born in Fayette County, son of Garland William and Ella Elizabeth Randall Radford. He attended Southwestern University for two years, transferring to A & M College, where he graduated in 1890. After his graduation he engaged in the banking business with his father at Quanah. He later attended the law school at the University of Virginia. After his admittance to the bar, he became associated as a lawyer with W. D. Cleveland & Company.
Mr. Radford incorporated the Oriental Textile Mills in 1901 and served as manager until 1912, when he became president. In 1940 he was made chairman of the board. He also organized the Oriental Securities, Inc., which later became John S. Radford & Sons. He served as president from the time of its organization. He was director of the Guardian Trust Company and of the Austin Nichols Company of New York. He organized the Texas Employees Insurance Association and served as first chairman of the board. He was a member of the Houston Club, Holland Lodge No. 1, A. F. and A. M., Scottish and York Rite Bodies, Arabia Temple Shrine and Kappa Sigma Fraternity.
He is survived by his wife; three sons, Rupert, John S. and Garland Radford of Houston, and a brother, Dr. G. W. Radford of Quanah. Funeral services will be held at Settegast-Kopf Company. Entombment will be in Forest Park Abbey. • The Houston Chronicle, Thursday, January 29, 1942, Page 6.
