Dorothy Burks Bingham, 98, of Lynchburg, died Monday, November 5, 2007 at Guggenheimer Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Curtis Taylor Bingham. Born May 12, 1909 in Nelson County, she was a daughter of the late Robert Lee and Lizzy Shephard Burks. Mrs. Bingham was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and sister. She was noted for her ability to recite the alphabet, backward. Mrs. Bingham was a member of Beulah Baptist Church. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Strode, Jack, Charles "Little Boogie", Tom, and Bob Burks and three sisters, Alice "Sister" Sarver, Amorette "Tootsie" Johnson, and Texie Pillow. Mrs. Bingham is survived by her son, Larry Bingham and his wife, Betty of Lynchburg; one brother, Baynard Burks of Pennsylvania and a sister, Florence B. DeFord of Lynchburg. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, November 8, 2007 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel by Dr. Maurice T. McCarthy, Jr. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home for one hour prior to the service, beginning at 10 a.m. and other times at the residence. Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider Beulah Baptist Church. Whitten Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Timberlake Chapel is serving the family.
