THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, October 19, 1916, page 1. "DIES OF BLOOD POISON. Edward Belcher, familiarly known as "Ed," died at the Sanitarium at Nevada of blood poison Saturday, October 14, 1916. Mr. Belcher was working about the place when he accidentally stepped on a nail which pierce his foot. Not thinking the injury serious he paid little attention to it for some days until it became inflamed, when the advice of a physician was secured and all was done that was possible to effect a cure. A few days before his death he was taken to the Sanitarium at Nevada, where the foot was operated upon but it seemed impossible to stay the poison which had gradually worked its way into the system and death came at 7:25 p. m. of the afore mentioned date. Edward, son of John and Mary Belcher, was born in Marion county, Indiana, July 10, 1845, and departed this life in Story county, Iowa, October 14, 1916, at the age of seventy-one years, three months and four days. When he was about eight years old he came with his parents to Iowa and settled in Story county, where he resided until about 1868, when he returned to Indianapolis, Indiana. Here he was united in marriage to Mary F. Shearer,*** October 5, 1870. Of this union one child, a son, was born. August 26, 1880, Mr. Belcher returned to Iowa and Story county, where he has since resided. Mrs. Belcher passed away March 6, 1908, and since her death deceased had made his home with his son, Al Belcher, in Iowa Center. He was the second born in a family of eleven children, five of these, three brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. The living brothers are John, of Collins; William and Frank, of Iowa Center. The sisters living are: Mrs. Elizabeth Fry, of Iowa Center, and Mrs. Mintie Whitinger, of Riceville, Iowa. He also leaves to mourn their loss a son and three grandchildren. Deceased had been a member of the Iowa Center church for a number of years and to the nurse who cared for him during his last illness, he expressed himself as ready to go when the summons should come. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. D. C. Busenburg in the Iowa Center church Monday, October 16th, at 2:30 p. m. and burial was made in the Iowa Center cemetery." ***Editorial note - The obituary of Edward's brother, John Conrad Belcher, states that John married a Mary M Shearer, July 27, 1871 and had two daughters.
