Charles Hudson Chesteen was born in Mississippi on Dec. 24, 1856, the son of Edmond Young and Susan E. (Holley) Chesteen. He was best known by his middle name, Hudson. At age 18, in 1875, he married Susan Alice Garrett, who was the same age. Susan was the daughter of Jonathan Joshua and Mary (Grantham) Garrett. They would have eight children: Charlie William, Edmond D., Lawrence Hudson (known as "Jack"), James J., Benny, Alvin, and twins Susan and Alice, but only four of these would reach maturity. By 1880, Hudson and Susan had their first two children and had a farm in Montgomery Co., Mississippi, with 24 acres of improved land, 135 acres of woodland, and 2 acres of other unimproved land.

As the years advanced, Hudson succeeded at his farm and had a fine home. For enjoyment, he played the fiddle. Calamity struck on May 2, 1890, when Susan died at age 33 after giving birth to the twins. The infant twins were each taken by relatives to be cared for, but both died within a year. Hudson married Frances Emma Skinner Burt (1863-1950), a widow, and they had six children from this marriage: Edna, Lela, David Clarence, Henry H., R.A., and Tommie Lee.

Charles Hudson Chesteen died of heart disease at age 59 on June 17, 1916, at his home in the Nations community, Montgomery Co., Mississippi, and is buried at Poplar Creek Nations Cemetery.
