Laura Olsen, age 93, died Jan 12, 2007, at Northwest hospital in Seattle. She was born February 2, 1913, in Hartington, Nebraska to Magnus and Bertha (Gearhart) Bottolfsen, one of eight children. Internment will be in the Paragon Cemetery family plot, rural Hartington, Nebraska.
Laura grew up on the family farm homesteaded by her grandparents Martin & Mari Bottolfsen in 1869. They immigrated to the United States from Norway about 1850, married in the United States and eventually settled in Cedar County, along with two other families, the first three families to settle in the region. Martin built the farmhouse that Laura grew up In. The farm and house remain in the family today.
Laura attended grade school in the rural schools. She attended and graduated from Hartington High School while living with the Oscar and Eva Jane Olsen family in town. She later married Warren Olsen on Jan 2 1936, one of Oscar and Eva Jane's six children.
The newly weds lived in Chadron, Nebraska, where Richard was born in 1937. Soon after, they moved to San Diego, California. In 1939, James was born, Five years later the family moved to the Eugene, Oregon area where Janet was born in 1947. In 1957 they moved again, this time to Sequin, Texas where Warren took a position on the staff of Texas Lutheran College. When Warren's health declined in 1962, he semi-retired and they moved to Auburn, California. The next 13 years were exploration years living for short periods in Desert Hot Springs, Hawaii and Mexico. In 1975 they moved to Mesa, Arizona where Warren died in 1993. Laura sold her house and lived in a retirement center until 2003 when failing health necessitated a move to the Seattle area senior care facilities to be close to Janet. Her son James had died from cancer in 1999.
Laura was a homemaker most of her life. She was a gentle, quiet person with a strong work ethic and moral character founded in her rugged development years on their pioneer farm. Her family and friends often saw her lifelong Christian faith and love in action. She had many dear friends. Excerpts from a letter written by Warren to Laura shortly before he died.
"….Service with love and compassion…unselfishly giving of yourself to anyone in need…all your life you have been helping people even when you were not feeling well…busy making afghans, quilts, to give…being able to help someone seemed to be your reward…you gave our family a solid Lutheran faith…ours is a close family, caring for each other, and resting on the Promise of God…you have been blessed with excellent health…I marvel at those days when you put out a big wash (wringer washer), make breakfast, vacuum…clean…shop…wash the car, cook dinner and clean the kitchen…I will be always grateful for your never ending love and devotion…"
Laura is survived by two children, son Richard and Fern Olsen of Sandpoint, Idaho and daughter Janet and Frank Kemp of Shoreline, Washington, four grandchildren, three great grand children and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Warren six brothers and one sister and her son James.
The remains were cremated.
