In search of a better life, Tom moved his family by train from Mississippi to Wharton County, Texas. Sadly, Eliza Louise became gravely ill with consumption and Tom moved the family from a rural area of the county into the city of Wharton, where Eliza Louise died. The family buried her in the Wharton City Cemetery before returning to family and friends in Mississippi.
