Husband of Martha C. Harris Williams (09/01/1852 -04/26/1873), father of one son; husband of Eliza Louise Taggart Williams (11/17/1849 -12/22/1898); father of nine children, 6 sons and 3 daughters. Thomas Claiborn was raised on the family's plantation farm in Mississippi. Early records indicate that Thomas Claiborn participated in the Civil War; but because of his young age, we believe he may have served as a water boy. However, he often told his grandchildren stories about the Civil War, including that he was shot in the leg during the battle of Vicksburg and was taken prisoner. He recounted that he was imprisoned on Ship Island, off the Mississippi Gulf Coast, for approximately six to eight months and had nothing to eat during his imprisonment except bean soup. Family legend remembers Thomas Claiborn as a cowboy who herded wild horses in Texas, as an adept carpenter, and as an excellent farmer. Tom is buried in the McGehee Cemetery located in Washington Parish between Bogalusa and Franklinton, but his grave bears no headstone.
