Mary Allen was one of the seven founders of the P.E.O. Sisterhood (Philanthropic Educational Organization), one of the pioneer societies for women, that was founded on January 21, 1869, at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Iowa.

Mary Jane Allen was the daughter of Reuben and Evelyn Allen. She was born in Mt. Pleasant on December 30, 1848. On July 4, 1871 she married Charles Lewis Stafford, a graduate of Iowa Wesleyan and a Methodist minister. He earned his D.D. Degree from Upper Iowa University in 1888, was president of Iowa Wesleyan from 1891-1899, and was presented an LL.D. from Iowa Wesleyan in 1905. ...
