US Soldier killed at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. On January 31, 1873, Pvt Knauth enlisted into the US Army at Rochester, NY. He was described as 5'8", blue eyes, light brown hair with a fair complexion. His civilian occupation was listed as merchant. On February 10, 1872, Knauth reported for duty at Louisville, KY. He was assigned to Company F, 7th US Cavalry Regiment. His primary duties were cook and quartermaster laborer. At the Battle of the Little Bighorn Company F was attached to LTC George Armstrong Custer's battalion. Knauth was killed sometime during the fighting. Two days after the battle most of Company F was found on or near Last Stand Hill. Knauth's unidentified remains were likely first buried where they had been found. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.
