Pvt Knauth was born in Baden Germany. On January 31, 1873, Knauth enlisted into the US Army at Rochester NY. He was described as 5-'8", blue eyes, light brown hair & a fair complexion. His civilian occupation was listed as merchant.

On February 10, 1872, Knauth reported for duty at Louiseville KY & was assigned to Company F, 7th US Cavalry. His primary duties were cook & quartermaster laborer.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn Company F was attached to LTC George Armstrong Custer's battalion. Knauth was killed sometime during the fighting.

Two days after the battle most of Company F was found on or near Last Stand Hill.

Knauth's unidentified remains were likely first buried where they had been found. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.
