Graveside services for Sylvia G. Polhemus will be conducted from the Prairie Home Cememtery at Holdrege on Tuesday Oct. 3, 2006, at 2 p.m. with Wayne Carlson, officiating.

Sylvia G. Polhemus, 74, of Holdrege, formerly of Funk, died on Friday, Sept. 29, 2005, at Christian Homes in Holdrege. She was born July 28, 1932, at Birmingham, Ala., one of two children of Glen and Travis "Mae" (Pelham) Durbin. She received her primary education at Birmingham, graduating from Phillips High School.

She then pursued higher education at Woodrow Wilson School of Grammar, Birmingham College, the University of Alabama, and later Washburn University in Topeka, Kan. Following her education, she served her country in the United States Air Force from Aug. 10, 1953, to Dec. 16, 1954. She married John "Jack" Isom and to this union one son, John Isom, Jr., was born. The family made their home in Alabama and Houston, Tex.

On Nov. 23, 1970 she married James A. Polhemus and the couple made their home in Funk. On Dec. 3, 2005, Mr. Polhemus died.

Survivors include her son, John Isom, Jr., of Houston, Tex., two grandsons, one step-daughter, Jane Womack and her special friend, Jerry McFarlin, of Pasadena, Tex., two step-sons, Mark Polhemus and his wife, Rita, of Sugarland, Tex., and Matthias Polhemus and his wife, Cindy, of West Columbia, Tex., seven step-grandchildren, five step-great-grandchildren, a brother-in-law, Eugene Polhemus, and his wife, Soffia, of Kearney, two sisters-in-law, Beth Perison and her husband, Tom, of Savannah, Georgia, and Evelyn Polhemus of Holdrege, other relatives and friends. Besides her husband James, she was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, step-son James, and brother-in-law, Lynn Polhemus.

Mrs. Polhemus will lie in state at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege on Tuesday, Oct. 3, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. prior to the graveside service. She will be buried next to her husband in the military section of Prairie Home Cemetery.

A memorial has been established in her memory to Christian Homes Chapel Fund.
