Dr. Brantley was the son of Joshua Brantley and Temperance Ann Radford/Brantley.
Dr. Brantley was married to Rebecca Tanner/Brantley on 11/29/1837 in Walton County, Georgia. This union brought about six children, who all lived to be adults.
In 1850, Dr. Brantley was practicing medicine in Forsyth Co., Georgia. He was living with his wife, Rebecca, and four children.
When the Civil War happened, three of Dr. Brantley's sons were soldiers. He got news of his son, William Joshua Brantley, being ill with mealses, north, in Maryland. Dr. Brantley went to see about his son, who had already died by the time he reached him. Dr. Brantley stayed and tried to doctor the other sick and wounded soliders there.
Dr. Brantley ended up sick himself and died from exposure from treating Civil War Soldiers. He is buried at this cemetery alone, with no relatives around him.
For some reason, they buried his wife in a different cemetery. There is a set of twins and a single grandbaby buried with her and this may be the reason.
Once I really got into this family, I realized how much tragedy happened for them. Their three oldest sons were all enlisted and were soldiers in the Civil War. They were all killed, one by one. Then their daughter, Margaret Jane Temperance Brantley, who was 20 years of age, died in 1864. And.....of course, Dr. Brantley, himself died from the effects of the Civil War.
In Jan 1861, their son, James J. Brantley died in Cobb County, Georgia. Another son, Wm. Joshua Brantley, died 9/1861, in Maryland. Then Dr. Brantley died March 18, 1862. Another son, Archibald Thomas Brantley died in 7/1864. Then their daughter died Sept. 1864. In less than four years, this wife and mother had lost three sons, her husband and her daughter. My heart went out to her and still does.
She had one remaining son and a daughter. They married a brother and a sister, so their children were double first cousins. They were most likely close as a family. They are buried at the Marietta City Cemetery (Ga) in different plots, but in sight of each other.
