The youngest of three children, Ida Mae Bowens was born Ida Mae Watkins in Byhalia, Mississippi on July 6, 1913 to Florence (Myers) Watkins and Richard Watkins, Jr.
Ida's siblings are as follows: Noble, born in 1912 and Ardoway born in 1910.
Ida's earliest known occupation was a farm laborer in Desoto County, Mississippi in 1930 on her mother's rented farm land.
Ida moved to Memphis, TN. after 1930 where she married Herman Hamilton Bowens, Sr. sometime after 1938. There they raised four children: Allie Belle born in 1938, Anna Florence born in 1949, Herman Hamilton, Jr. born in 1952 and Dorothy Ruth born in 1955.
Ida is the first non-farmer business owner in my maternal ancestry, she owned an ice cream shop in Memphis called Cookie's.
Ida has eleven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and two great great grandchidren.
Ida Mae died on November 1, 1992 in Memphis of multiple strokes. She is buried in New Park Cemetary in Memphis.
