Daughter of Charles Lewis Percival and Emily Kezar. She was named after her father's beloved sisters, Lodema and Caroline, and her father's mother.
Second wife of Thomas Shurtleff, married on September 10, 1868 in San Francisco, CA at 25 years old. She became an instant mother to his five children before she gave birth to Helen Emily Shurtleff, who would marry Henry Clarence Stevens.
Lodema had typhoid in Aug of 1865.
Thomas bought a house on Gethsemane Street (determined to be Jordan Street) on Piety Hill, Nevada City for Lodema and his five children in 1869, the same year Lodema's father traveled to see her in Nevada City from Hatley. Thomas had a thriving grocery business in Nevada City in 1870, and the census states his brother Solon (who had earned his M.D. degree from Geneva College, New York in 1853) was living with them, working as a clerk for Thomas, evidently he came to CA because of his ill health. Lodema had left Nevada City to visit her father in Quebec March of 1872, followed by Thomas in May. Thomas sold the house 03 Oct 1872, he and his oldest son, William Taylor, showed up in Normal, Illinois in 1873, where Thomas's brother, Samuel was living as a successful farmer. Lodema's father left Quebec for Illinois in August of 1874, returned to Hatley the following March, Lodema must have been in Illinois by that time.
Lodema's diary from 1895 had many comments about how she was not feeling well and that she was getting worse. Lodema died in Nevada City in 1896, February 12th, from 'severe shock'. She was so loved by Thomas's children they named children after her.
She was a school teacher at Mc Lacy S. H. Barnston School.
After a long search and great lengths, Lodema's death certificate and news obituary were found thanks to the Doris Foley Historical Library in Nevada City. Her daughter, Helen was not mentioned.

Mrs. Thomas Shurtleff Passed Away Wednesday Afternoon
Grim death visited Nevada City again Wednesday afternoon and this time to Mrs. Thomas Shurtleff was called to her last home. the lady expired at about 3 o'clock, having been ill for a few days.
The cause of her death was a severe nervous shock. On Sunday evening she was out riding with her husband and a horse was tied behind. As has been stated, a son of Fred Searls was kicked by the animal and Mrs. Shurtleff was badly frightened. She did not seem to recover and this is the direct cause of death.
Deceased was a kind and lovable woman and had a host of friends. She was born at Massapi, Quebec, Canada and was aged about 52 years. She was married to Thomas Shurtleff some years ago, being his second wife. To mourn her loss she leaves a husband and four step-children, as follows: Mrs. Flint, who resides in New York City, Rev J. T. Shurtleff, Santa Rosa, Clarence and William Shurtleff, who are residents of this city.
The funeral will take place from the residence of R. H. Forman on Piety Hill on Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
