Tech Sgt. John Hillmer is the son of John and Catherine Hillmer. He enlisted in the Air Force Nov. 27, 1942.
He and three other crewman aboard the C47 "Lilly Bell II" were killed when their aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from southern England into a farm field at Hurst Farm, Jacobs Well, Guildford.
In addition to crew chief/flight engineer, 21-year-old Technical Sergeant John R. Hillmer; those killed were: 28-year-old 1st Lieutenant Mercer Wilson Avent; acting co-pilot, 32-year-old Flight Officer John Edmund Wright; radio operator, and 21-year-old Staff Sergeant Dale E. Dellinger.

Tech Sgt. Hillmer and the rest of the Lilly Belle crew were assigned to the 89th Troop Carrier Squadron of the 438th Troop Carrier Group, 53rd Troop Carrier Wing, 9th Air Force. The 438th was the lead TCG of D-Day, flying in the very first American Airborne troops to liberate France.
