Brutus came into our lives Christmas Day 1989. He was just a few weeks old, a scared, trembling little ball of fur, so tiny, so precious. He proceeded to steal our hearts.

He was a tiny little poodle, barely 7 pounds, with the heart of a lion. He protected his beloved family ferociously. He always "wanted to be" a Border Collie when he grew up. He chased and rounded up the family's livestock, running like the wind, barking madly, nipping at their heels until they were safely in the corral at night. After his job was finished, he came inside with his newly-groomed coat that was once sweet smelling, now full of "hitchhikers" and beggar lice and dirt, messy, but very pleased with a job well done.

He liked having special treats like ice cream, tacos, hot dogs, spaghetti, the cat's food, everything except "dog" food which he only ate grudgingly if that was all that was available to him. He loved turkey, green beans, and rice, carrots and beef stew. His favorite thing was his bedraggled teddy bear which he carried everywhere.

He was truly loved and will always be missed. He was my little "Velcro" dog and never left my side. I miss him.

At age 13, while he was still very active and healthy, he was killed instantly early one spring day when he was hit by a car. He was buried in his favorite spot where he used to chase the squirrels and rabbits.

His memorial plaque reads: "In Loving Memory of Brutus - He Had a Brave Heart." And indeed, he did.
