I am in Roanoke Alabama and am tracing my familys history. I am tracing Caldwell, Floyd, Young, Waller, Benefield, Stone, Ussery and a few others. All of my family is from Georgia and Alabama. I spend quite a bit of time going through old newspapers and if I run across an obituary I check find a grave for a memorial. If I find a memorial, I will send a copy of the obituary to the contributor for the memorial. I know what it's like to be searching for any little tidbit of information and not being able to find anything. I am searching for information on my Great Great Great Granddaddy Samuel Young. He was married to Louisa Benefield and had a child Thomas Jefferson Young. Granddaddy Samuel died in the Civil War and I have no idea where his remains are at and this tugs at my heart everyday. Harvey Hester is to be commended for raising Thomas J as his own after he and Louisa married. If you have any information on Granddaddy Samuel born approx 1837 please get in touch with me. From everything I have ever heard and read the people I descend from were good, hardworking christian people and I am honored to help put together accurate information on the sweet past days of these precious, generous, kind people.

OLD MANUSCRIPT

A matter of more than ordinary importance to the writer, concerning an old manuscript, may prove of some interest to some of our readers. At the risk of being criticized for the personal feature of it, we will here refer to it. One night recently, while removing the contents of the drawer of an old table that had been in our home since our earliest recollections, we found, among other trinkets, an old but well preserved manuscript of odd size and color. It was marked "Stevenson Genealogy" and was in the handwriting of this editor's father, the late Rev. John B. Stevenson. It was dated December 1858.

The paper spoke interestingly of the times and characters of the Revolutionary period. The scene was North Carolina. Among other things the manuscript states, "The entire ancestry of my parents were all Whigs during the Revolutionary War; and many of them fought, bled and some died in the service. William Payne (the author's mother's father) was under the command of Charles Washington James Stevenson (his other grandfather) volunteered at the age of 16 years under Capt. Hall and was several years in the service, sometimes subduing the tories and sometimes meeting the trained legions of the King."

As the moral of this, we wish to suggest that parents would do well to write a brief history of themselves and their ancestry to hand down to their children. In this way an interesting and accurate genealogical table could be kept and future generations would have a more intelligent idea of who they are and whence they came. Act on this suggestion and your children will bless you.

If I sent you an old obituary, maiden name, birthday, etc... please update the memorial. If you don't have time to update the memorial please consider transfering the memorial to me. There are a considerable number of folks doing research and this site is an AWESOME tool and memorials need to be as accurate as possible. If the memorial was your loved one you would want it correct, right? Some of the late 1880's and early 1900 obituaries even give a cause of death along with other pertinant information. What may not be important to you may very well be important to that persons loved one. Remember the Golden Rule and leave the ego at the door.
