A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Reading August 16, 1864, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 26 as a private with Co. E, 205th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company on June 2, 1865. He was a laborer by trade and stood 5' 2" tall and had dark hair and hazel eyes. At enlistment, he claimed to be seventeen years of age, below the minimum of eighteen. It is possible that his parents granted written permission but, if so, they lied about his age too because he was only fifteen. He may have grown taller than 5' 2".

He was the husband of Lydia J. (Fox) Cook, who shares his tombstone.
