Henry Ahrens Dies In Crash; Richards, Two Sons, Injured
Republic Farmer's Rites Friday; Hospital Says Patients Better
Tragedy struck on the highway in The Republic vicinity, late Tuesday, in an intersection collision taking a toll of one life and bringing serious if not critical injuries to three others.
The man killed and those injured and their injuries are: Henry L. Ahrens, 54, Republic farmer, killed almost instantly. He sustained a basal skull fracture. He was dead when reached in his car.
Rodger Richards, 34, who suffered severe scalp lacerations, blows about the head and body. His scalp and part of one eyelid were about half torn away, but have been restored.
Beryl Richards, 7, son of Rodger. Severe head injuries, cuts and bruises.
Gale Richards, 5, son of Rodger, injuries about the same as his brother's.
Dr. Clayton W. Clark of Nashua, called to the scene two miles south of Republic at the Bert Feuchtwanger corner, ordered the injured taken to the New Hampton hospital, that being the closest. Both the Chenoweth and Larkin ambulances were called, Chenoweth's arriving first. The injured were given emergency treatment at the nearby Edward Harris home until the ambulance arrived.
The three men were all described as being in critical condition last night, and were unconscious. It was pointed out that the head injuries alone were enough to cause concussion. The father was in a state of shock, due to his blows and loss of blood.
All three were described Wednesday afternoon as showing "gradual improvement", but still in serious condition. They were semi-conscious.
There were no eyewitnesses to the accident. Richards, who is the C and H Farm Service wagon driver, was driving his Plymouth sedan, and was going east on the road, after leaving the Eugene Martin place. Rodger formerly farmed in that area.
Ahrens had been at the Waverly livestock sale that afternoon, and was heading north. He also drove a Plymouth, a 5-passenger coupe. Both the Ahrens and Richards cars are of 1947 or '48 vintage.
It was about 5:30 pm., or shortly thereafter, that the crash occured. The left front of the Ahrens car, and the right front of Richards' were bashed in. Both cars were all but completely wrecked.
A truck driver for the Waverly sales barn was following at some distance behind Ahrens, to deliver some sheep Ahrens had purchased at the sale. He said he did not see the accident.
Mrs. Richards was her home in Nashua notified at of the accident. She left her other three children with friends, and went first to the accident scene and then to the hospital. She remained at the hospital all night, and returned to Nashua about 10:30 a.m. Meantime, her mother had come up from Waverly to be with her daughter.
Funeral services for Mr. Ahrens will be held Friday afternoon at the Republic Community church, of which he and his family were members. The Rev. Ernest Allen, former pastor, will return here from Rock Rapids to conduct the services. Burial will be at Henry's former home at Clarksville.
Mr. Ahrens is survived by his wife; an infant son, Tommy, age 20 months; and a step-daughter, Janice Klunder. The family came to the Republic vicinity about five years ago from Clarksville when they purchased the former Hicks place. The accident occurred only about a mile south of the farm.
