FENWICK G. GARDINER SR., 65, of Wampanoag Circle, a retired town fire chief, died yesterday at home. He was the husband of Arlene (Haggarty) Gardiner.
Born in East Greenwich, a son of the late Sylvester and Mabel (Hallene) Gardiner, he lived in North Kingstown for many years.
Mr. Gardiner was appointed to the North Kingstown Fire Department Call Force in 1950, and to the permanent department in 1956. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1963, to deputy chief in 1972, and to chief in 1983. He retired in 1987. He was a member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, the National Fire Protection Association, the Rhode Island Fire Chiefs Association, the Rhode Island Firefighters Instructors Association, and the New England Veterans Firemen's Association. He also was a member of Local 1651, IAFF.
He was a member of the Coventry/West Greenwich Horseshoe League. He was a foreman for the Hand Tub Washington for many years. He was in business for many years in the F.G. Gardiner Construction Co.
Besides his wife he leaves two daughters, both of Warwick; two sons, of North Kingstown and of Richmond; three brothers, Gilbert Gardiner Sr. and Preston Gardiner, both of North Kingstown, and Vernon Gardiner of East Greenwich; and seven grandchildren.
