Family trees on Ancestry.com show Verna's maiden name as McCullen. Her marriage record shows her maiden name as McHune. Her granddaughter, Carole Jenkins, states that the correct spelling is McCluhan. Find-a-grave member Leonard Louis Meador added that Verna was the daughter of John McCluhan and Elizabeth ?.

Verna married Benjamin Franklin Barron on May 14, 1902 in Higbee, Randolph County, Missouri. They made their home in Slater, Saline County, Missouri, where Ben worked for the railroad. They had 8 children:

Sybil Oneta (Barron) Lawson 1905-
Charles Harper Barron 1906-1959
Elva Elizabeth (Barron) Mercer 1907-1961
Blanche Margaret [Rebecca] Barron 1910-
Mary Helen Barron 1911-1926
Benjamin Frederick Barron 1914-1948
Ruth D. Barron 1918-2014
Robert Vernon Barron 1920-1923

The 1910 census shows the family was living in Slater Ward 2, Saline County, Missouri. Benjamin was listed as Benj. F. Barren (last name misspelled) 28, wife Verna 28, and 4 children are in the home, Sybil 5, Charles 4, Elva 2, and Rebecca 1 month.

In the 1920 census, Benjamin and Verna and their family were living in the same location. They had 7 children in the home at that time, Sybil O. 15, Charles H. 13, Elva E. 12, Blanch M. 10, Mary Helen 8, Ben F. 5, and Ruth D. 1 yr. & 9 months. [Note: Blanch M. in this census and Rebecca in the previous census appear to be the same child.]

A 1930 census for this family cannot be found. Benjamin died in 1934.

In the 1940 census, if this is the correct person, Verna Barron was a widow living in Seattle, King County, Washington, with a Goss family. She was their maid. She apparently moved back to Missouri at some point, as the Social Security Death Index shows she died in 1961 and her last address was Kansas City, Missouri. (Verna's son Fred' homes address was in Kansas City when he died in 1948.) However, no Missouri Death Certificate can be found for Verna. Both Benjamin and Verna are buried at Slater City Cemtery, along with their children Fred, Mary Helen, and Robert Vernon.
