Benjamin Franklin Barron was the son of Daniel Lewis Barron (1843-1916) and Frances Elizabeth "Fannie" (Maxfield) 1857-1936).

Note: Some sources show that Benjamin Franklin Barron went by Frank, but this may be incorrect. Please note that he had a brother named Frances Earl Barron who went by Frank, and this could be confusing. It is believed that Benjamin went by Ben. However, Benjamin Franklin Barron will be referred to as Benjamin in this memorial.

Benjamin's father, Daniel Barron, was born in Ireland. He sailed to the United States from Liverpool, England in 1852 and arrived in New York. Fourteen brothers and sisters joined him in the States after 1860. Daniel traveled around the United States before deciding to settle down in 1873 near Higbee in Randolph County, Missouri. He married Miss Frances Maxfield who was a native of Randolph County but whose parents came from Kentucky. Daniel and Francis Barron had 13 known children, of whom Benjamin was the 4th oldest. His known siblings were:

Mary Lou Mamie Barron 1876-1947
John Patrick Barron 1878-1954
James Buchanan Barron 1880-1932
Frances Pearl Barron 1882-1974
Blanche A. Barron 1884-1884
William Marshall Barron 1885-1960
Katherine Bishop Barron 1887-1940
Emmett Robert Barron 1888-1950
Francis Earl "Frank" Barron 1891-
Margaret A. Barron 1894-1948
Daniel Bryan Barron 1896-1962
Della Agnes Barron 1899-1973

In the 1900 census, Benjamin was age 18, living with his parents and 10 siblings in Randolph County, Missouri. In the 1910 census, Benjamin's parents had moved to Rogers County, Oklahoma. His parents and 5 of their children were in the home. Daniel Barron was farming. Sons James and Frank were doing odd jobs. Benjamin was not with his family to Oklahoma in 1910 as he was married and living in Saline County, Missouri, at that time.

On May 14, 1902 in Higbee, Randolph County, Missouri, Frank Barron had married Verna McCluhan (1881-1969) who was from Higbee, Missouri. They moved to Slater, Saline County, Missouri, where Benjamin worked for the railroad. They had the following known children:

Sybil Oneta (Barron) Lawson 1905-
Charles Harper Barron 1906-1959
Elva Elizabeth (Barron) Mercer 1907-1961
Blanche Margaret Barron 1910-
Mary Helen Barron 1911-1926
Benjamin Frederick Barron 1914-1948
Ruth D. Barron 1918-
Robert Vernon Barron 1920-1923

In 1910, the family was living in Slater Ward 2, Saline County, Missouri. Benjamin was listed as Benj. F. Barren (last name misspelled) 28, wife Verna 28, and 4 children were in the home, Sybil 5, Charles 4, Elva 2, and Rebecca 1 month [believe this should be Blanche Margaret].

In the 1920 census, Benjamin and Verna and their family were living in the same location. They had 7 children in the home at that time, Sybil O. 15, Charles H. 13, Elva E. 12, Blanch M. 10, Mary Helen 8, Ben F. 5, and Ruth D. 1 yr. & 9 months. [Note: Blanch M. in this census and Rebecca in the previous census appear to be the same child who was Blanche Margaret.]

A 1930 census for this family cannot be found. Benjamin died in 1934.

Social Security Death Index shows that Verna died in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1916. Both are buried at Slater City Cemtery.

STORY OF BEN BARRON WRITTEN IN 2002 BY CAROLE WILSON JENKINS, GRANDDAUGHTER

Ben Barron was born in Higbee, Missouri, in 1880 to Daniel Louis Barron and Francis (Fannie) Maxfield Barron. He was one of 13 children born to them. Ben was married in 1902 to Verna McCluhan of Triplett, Missouri, a nearby town. After marrying, they moved to Slater, Missouri, where Ben worked on the Chicago, Alton RR. He was a coalman and later the engineer. He ran from Slater, Missouri, depot to the roundhouse at Alton, Illinois. His route took him through the back yard tracks of his mother Fannie's home in Higbee, Missouri. She cheered him on at every opportunity, as he blew the whistle as the train approached Higbee.

Verna and Ben Barron raised 8 children in Slater, Missouri: Sybil Oneta, Charles Harper, Elva Elizabeth, Frederick, Blanche, Mary Helen, Robert, and Ruth Dee. All the children attended school in Slater.

Ben died in 1936 of heart trouble after being overcome by smoke on the steam engine.
