Eldridge was the Orderly Sergeant of Company B in the 15th Virginia Infantry, Confederate States Army. He enlisted on 14 May 1861 at Richmond as a Private. Foster was made Corporal on 1 May 1862, and then Sergeant on 10 June 1862. He stayed till the end and was paroled at Appomattox Courthouse. In 1866 he married Judith Robertson.
