I believe the informant on Calvin's death certificate was incorrect when she put his birth year at 1830. The month and date were likely chosen to coincide with his death month and date. I don't think Calvin himself knew the month and date of his birth. According to his personal statement on his application for pension, he was born about 1836 in Eastern Tennessee. His enlistment papers (posted) give his age as 23 when he enlisted in 1863 which puts his birth around 1840.
