John W. Watts, died at his home 230 East Sixth street, this morning at 12.30 o'clock, aged 70 years 11 months and 19 days. Death was due to general debility. Mr. Watts was a native of Frederick and went west when a young man. He was in Ohio when the Civil War broke out, and enlisted at Tiffin, O., and saw most active service throughout the war, having participated in 23 large engagements, and a number of skirmishes. He was in the battle of Gettysburg. He was twice wounded, once with a bayonet at Cedar Mountain, receiving a stab in the arm, and a bullet struck him on the thumb at the battle of Chancellorsville. The father of Mr. Watts was also in the Union Army, enlisting in the Third Maryland Regiment. For some time after the war Mr. Watts resided in Washington, and later took up residence here. He was a member of Lincoln Post, G.A.R., Washington, Seneca Tribe of Red Men, and Mt. Vernon Council Jr. O.A.U.M., Washington. He was twice married. He is survived by his wife and three sons and one daughter as follows: Robert, George F. and John M. Watts, all of Washington, and Mrs. James Marvel, Germantown.
The funeral will be held on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Services will be held at the house. Interment will be made in Mt. Olivet cemetery. Thomas P. Rice is the funeral director.
