He was born April 29, 1927, in La Porte, to Raymond and Mabel (Voss) McDermott.
William was a certified professional engineer for Allis Chalmers – Agco for fifty-one years. As a young man, he was well known as a pitcher for fast pitch softball. William enjoyed bowling and won Bowler Of The Year. He also loved playing golf, swimming and woodworking. He loved to create birdhouses and Door Prairie Barn reproductions. William was an active member of the Polish Falcons.
On May 29, 1969, in La Porte, he married Ann (Johnson) McDermott, who survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Elizabeth (Dennis) Moser of Moscow, KS, Judy (David) Kenninger of Brownsburg, IN, Mary (David) Goughnour of Thorton, CO; two sons, Michael (Debora) McDermott of La Porte and Mark (Terri) McDermott of Union Mills, IN; one brother, Jim McDermott; sixteen grandchildren; and twelve great grandchildren.
Preceding in death were his parents; his first wife, Phyllis Bowers; two sisters, Marilyn Bennett, Carol Woods; and one brother, Robert McDermott.
A funeral will be held at 4 p.m., Saturday, July 13, 2013 at Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, 247 W. Johnson Rd., La Porte (219) 362-3100 with Pastor Chris Armiger officiating. Visitation and viewing will be from 1 p.m. until time of service Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery at a later date.
