LUCY KNELL BUCKWELL DIES AT 90; SERVICES TUESDAY
Mrs. Lucy Knell Buckwell, 90 of St. Luke's Care Center, died at 11:30 p.m. Saturday in McCune-Brooks Hospital, where she was admitted last Monday. She had been seriously ill the past month.
Born April 17, 1883 in Carthage, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edward Knell. Her father founded the Knell Mortuary on December 14, 1882. It is the oldest business in Carthage still operated by the same family.
Mrs. Buckwell graduated from the Carthage Collegiate Institute, which was located where the Mark Twain Elementary School now stands.
She was married to George G. Buckwell, on June 10, 1908 in Carthage. They lived in Carthage until 1916, when they moved to Jefferson City and the following year to Kansas City.
Mr. Buckwell died September 23, 1920. Mrs. Buckwell then returned to Carthage and joined the Knell mortuary. She was a licensed embalmer. She and her sister, Miss Emma R. Knell, were the only women licensed embalmers in Jasper County. Their father, E. Knell was the first licensed embalmer in Jasper County, holding the seventh license to be issued in the state of Missouri.
Mrs. Buckwell was active in operation of Knell Mortuary until march of 1949, when she sold her interest to her nephews, Frank W. Knell and Robert H. Knell, who continued management of the firm.
Her father, who founded the Knell Fair, which later became the Southwest Missouri Fair, died December 24, 1910. Her mother, Susan Knell, died October 18, 1946. Her sister Emma R. Knell, died September 19, 1963. Two brothers also preceded her in death, Fred E. Knell and Frank W. Knell, Sr., who died March 31, 1943. All were licensed embalmers and funeral directors.
Mrs. Buckwell made her home at 320 East Chestnut before moving to St. Luke's six months ago.
Surviving are one daughter;
