A fire on the upper floor of the mortuary on April 3, 1930 caused about $30,000 damage to its premises on 3rd Street. Frank Knell, Sr., narrowly escaped serious injury. Blinded by smoke, he started to step on the elevator. Just at that point, someone below started the lift and Knell's foot was caught between the elevator and the edge of the floor.
