Artist and teacher. Moved with her family from Castine, Maine to Washington, D.C., about 1862; remained to 1925. Studied painting with William Merritt Chase at the Art Students League, New York. Married William Henry Holmes, 1883. Studied art in Europe for half a year. Taught art in local schools and at the Madeira School, McLean, Va.

1910, president of the Society of the Applied Arts; 1914, Parlamentarian of the Montgomery County Federation of Women's Clubs; 1915, member of the committee in charge of the conference of the Women's Auxiliary of the Second Pan-American Conference.

Had two children: William Heberling Holmes and Osgood Holmes.
