He was a teacher and telegraph operator in Maine, where he married Cornelia Adams Upham on 26 Nov 1855. In about 1863, they moved to Washington, D.C., where he remained. He was a clerk for the U.S. Treasury from 1863 until his death.

They had five children: William James Osgood, Kate Clifton Osgood, Clarence Whitman Osgood, Agnes Mary Osgood, and Cornelia Lovica Osgood.
