Levi enlisted in the Civil War on 4 Feb 1865 in Richview, Illinois at the age of 17 years. He was a Private in Company I, 154th Infantry Regiment Illinois. He mustered out on 22 May 1865. Levi's brother Edward C. Buckner died in the Civil War battle at Fort Donelson in Tennessee in 1862.

Levi married w#1-Kate Raber on 5 Apr 1870 and they had a daughter Etta "Ettie" Buckner and then divorced. He married w#2-Clara Coston in 1878 and they had a daughter Bessie Buckner in 1879 and a son Arthur E. Buckner in 1881 (both born in Washington State) and divorced the same year. He married w#3-Clara Frances "Fannie" Miller in 1884 and they had 6 children.
