Eli Griffin of Niles,Michigan was in the dry goods business when he entered service on Aug.19,1861 as a Captain in Co.A, 6th Michigan Infantry.He was wounded in action on May 27,1863 and resigned his commission because of this on July 17,1863.On Oct.22,1863,he re-entered service as a Major in the 19th Michigan Infantry.He took command of the regiment following the death of Col. Gilbert at Chickamauga,and was promoted to Lieut.Col.on April 20,1864.Due to a power struggle within the regiment,he was never mustered at this grade.On June 16,1864,he died of wounds received in action at Golgotha Church,Georgia,south of Macon, on June 15. "Come!come ye braves-aye come!The battle dawn is nigh;And the screaming trump and the thundering drum Are calling thee to die!"
