From the Maryville Times, Wed Nov 23, 1892. Provided by the Blount County Library in Maryville, Tn:

We clip the following from the Journal's correspondence as the writer was better acquainted with Mr. McNeal than the TIMES man.

At four o'clock this morning Rev. James McNeal departed this life at his home in North Maryville. Until a few weeks ago he was quite active in the ministry, and very zealous in Christian work. He attended the prayer meeting in New Providence Presbyterian chruch one Wednesday evening, and was apparently in the best of health and spirits; in fact, he was joyous and full of glee. Going home he was that night stricken with paralysis and lingered along until relieved by death this morning.

In the pulpit, Mr. McNeal was one of the strongest ministers of the synod of Tennessee. He was tender, eloquent and powerful as a public speaker. He was born in Ohio, but has been living in this state for many years. In his younger days, when it was quite unpopular to do so, he espoused the cause of the slave, and with vigor fought the institution of slavery with all the ardor of his soul. That evil out of the way, he greatly rejoiced in the establishment of universal liberty in our country and fearlessly directed his powers against the saloon curse, and fought that evil while he had strength to raise his voice. His last brief public talk was on that subject in the prayer meeting the same evening that he was stricken with the disease that carried him away. He will be greatly missed in the synodical and presbyterial councils of his church.
