Jennie V. Sass was his first wife. They were married on April 22, 1865, at St. Louis, Missouri. Jennie died in 1886, and on June 26, 1887 at Haven, Reno Co, KS, Joseph married a second time to Serena Alice Astle (née Fowler, previously married to unknown Hatfield).
Joseph Astle & Jennie Sass had five known children:
Charlotte A. married Ezra Wooster Benson;
Katherine married Edgar Fendley;
Charles Richard married Erena Battis;
Lillie May Astle;
William L. Astle.
Joseph and Alice had two children:
Joseph Byron who married Pauline Carlton;
Serena Ruth who married Paul Maxwell Williams, and in the 1920's moved to Washington, D.C.
Joseph Astle was a member of International Order of Odd Fellows Lodge No. 314.
There is an unconfirmed report that Joseph Astle was a Civil War veteran. His older brothers, William and George, both served in Company I of the 97th Illinois Infantry, but no record has been found of Joseph's service, if any.
