OSCAR DELONEY STEPHENS, JR of Mount Dora, FL. Oscar has a marker stone in the Stephens family plot in the Pine Forest Cemetery in Mount Dora. Services were held on June 27, 1978 in St Edward's Episcopal Church of Mount Dora for Oscar D. Stephens, Jr., who died June 24 at the age of 57. A scouting and conservation leader, he owned and operated Stephens Cleaners in Mount Dora until failing health forced him to retire several months ago. Oscar was born in Lincoln, AL and lived in Alexander, LA before moving here 52 years ago. During his lifetime involvement with Scouting, he received the Scouter's Key, The District Award of Merit and the Scouter's Training Award. In February 1976, he received the Silver Beaver, the highest honor the Central Florida Council can bestow. Oscar was active in conservation, which he taught to many Scouting groups over the years. When Lake County was in the Fourth Congressional District, Mr. Stephens received that district's Award for Environmental Control Projects and he was instrumental in planting thousands of seedlings in the area, with the help of Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. He was also active with the Sertoma International and the Lake Sertoma Club, notably involved with the Sertoma Lodge at Camp La-No-Che. He was a veteran of WWII and a member of the American Legion and the Forty-and-Eight. Surviving is his wife, Elsie A. Sirmon Stephens; son, Thomas Edward and parents, Oscar D. Jr and Alma Wallace Knox Stephens, all of Mount Dora and brother, William Charles Stephens of Eustis. The Reverend Walter B. Peterson, rector of St. Edward's officiated at the funeral and Rehbaum-Harden Funeral Home, Mount Dora, FL was in charge of arrangements. Oscar was cremated and is buried in the churchyard cemetery at St. Andrews Orthodox Church in Eustis, Florida.
This notice was in the paper in the Letters To The Editor....Mount Dora Topic, June 29, 1978. They don't often write front page obituaries for such people as Oscar Stephens, Jr. You see, he wasn't the type of person concerned with being a big "I". He didn't agitate the populace, irritate the city council or expound as to what is wrong with our city. He was just about the most honest man I have ever known. He lived only for others and worked hard to provide for his family and to satisfy his customers.
The past 30 years his way of life, leadership and philosophy guided young boys into men with positions of respect and leadership in our community. He dedicated his life to others, especially to the Boy Scouts of America. His untiring devotion, energy and untold hours of behind-the-scenes work is most commendable and a distinct credit to himself and to that in which he believed. Oscar and I came to Mount Dora in the same year, as youngsters. Throughout these years, my life has been more pleasant because of his quick wit, gentleness and a desire to see a task completed to its logical conclusion. Mount Dora is going to miss Oscar Stephens - I know that I am.
